Currents & Campsites James is finishing writing his book on adventure canoe / kayak camping

Here’s an extract from it…

1944, William J. Hoffman, one of Grummans aircraft executives, took a wooden canoe which was skinned in canvas, his fishing pole and went off trout fishing in the Adirondack mountains. Eventually, the canoe soaked with water and with the heavy wooden frame caused an inevitable issue of weight. Hoffman would find himself paddling and portaging about forty-five kilos of canoe in and around Muskrat Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Weight was an issue.

Hoffman, during his trout adventure, wondered how to make his canoe lighter. He would use the aluminium from the construction of the fighter planes to build such a canoe.

For me, this magic began at 16, as a young Army recruit. A call for the toughest paddlers to challenge the grueling Arctic Canoe Race - 537 kilometers over five days - sparked a lifelong passion for pushing boundaries and exploring the world by water.

Years later, the thrill of adventure still calls, but now it draws me to tranquil rivers and secluded islands, where campfires crackle under starry skies. This book is my invitation to join me on this journey. Whether you're a seasoned paddler or a curious beginner, this is your guide to unlocking the freedom and joy of adventure canoe or kayak camping.
